Fishing spots in İstanbul: 273 places, district by district

İstanbul is the province with the most spots in our catalog: 273 separate fishing grounds. Three arms of the sea (the Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara, the Black Sea) plus inland waters all meet in one city — which is why there is both variety and confusion.

This article is not a list of “the best spots”. It shows what kind of structure sits where; the rest is decided by the season and the wind.

Which districts are the spots in?

The first eight districts carry half the total:

• Sarıyer — 26 spots. The northern mouth of the Bosphorus; hard current, deep water close in.
• Çatalca — 24 spots. The Black Sea coast and the ponds.
• Adalar — 22 spots. Rocky shore and jetties.
• Kadıköy — 19 spots. Mostly promenade and breakwater.
• Şile — 17 spots. Black Sea beaches, surf casting country.
• Beykoz — 17 spots. The Anatolian side of the Bosphorus, the coves.
• Fatih — 16 spots. The Sarayburnu–Yenikapı stretch.
• Silivri — 15 spots. The Sea of Marmara coast, shallow and long.

Why does the type of spot matter?

Two spots in the same district can be worlds apart. The spread in İstanbul looks like this:

• Jetty / quay — 85 spots. Places where you reach deep water on foot. The most practical choice for an evening session under the lights.
• Sandy beach shore — 52 spots. Calls for a long cast; the fish patrol the line where the wave breaks.
• River / stream mouth — 28 spots. Where fresh water mixes with the sea; a classic for European seabass and grey mullet.
• Promenade / esplanade — 26 spots. Easy access, crowded.
• Pond — 23 · Reservoir — 22 spots. The forgotten side of İstanbul: carp and pike water.
• Headland / point — 13 spots. Where the current squeezes through; this is where the predators pass.

So 45 of the city’s spots are not sea at all but inland water. If there is no fish in the Bosphorus, the answer is not necessarily a drive to Şile.

What comes out where?

A rough matching:

• Bosphorus jetties — Atlantic horse mackerel, bluefish, big kofana; crowded in autumn.
• Black Sea beaches — whiting, red mullet, and striped red mullet in the turbot season.
• Sea of Marmara coast — gilthead seabream, European seabass, white seabream; shallow water and patient fishing.
• Stream mouths — European seabass and grey mullet, especially after rain.
• Reservoirs and ponds — common carp, northern pike, European perch.
